Marae Haŋa Piko was transformed on Saturday, August 8th, into an unforgettable experience for all the children who attended the latest edition of Ŋāpokilandia, the major event organized by the Rapa Nui Municipality to celebrate Children’s Day, which this year focused on the theme of science and technology.
It was a fantastic day with a large turnout of families, where children from zero to twelve years old had the opportunity to take on different roles in a joyful atmosphere. In addition, there were sports and gastronomic activities. Some for a while were anthropologists; others, marine biologists.
They were also able to conduct experiments, operate large machinery, conduct interviews as journalists or television cameramen, and learn about the work of the numerous institutions present with their staff and technical capabilities to carry out this wonderful activity.
“Many people came, many children of all ages and also many adults who were impressed because there were marine species they didn’t know existed. So for us, it’s incredibly rewarding to teach them what we know, and sharing this knowledge fills our hearts,” commented Moiko Pakomio, who welcomed enthusiastic attendees to the Municipality’s Marine Research Unit stand, where they were able to use the microscopes set up there.
The Mayor of Rapa Nui, Elizabeth Arévalo Pakarati, thanked all the municipal teams and all the entities that made this new edition of Ŋāpokilandia possible, which is part of the Haka Ara Family Agenda.
“This wonderful activity is part of the annual program we offer our residents to promote recreation and encourage them to spend time with their families. This time, we are focusing on our children, the new generations, and we want to provide them with these spaces to strengthen and reinforce our bonds as a community,” added the mayor.
En la realización de Ŋāpokilandia 2026 participaron los equipos municipales de Producción, de las direcciones de Operaciones, Desarrollo Comunitario (Dideco), la Dirección de Medio Ambiente y de Seguridad Pública, junto con las corporaciones municipales de Deporte y Recreación y de Arte y Cultura.
