Puo Hiro

In the eastern region of the island, near La Pérouse Bay, there is an oval-shaped stone with numerous holes. This stone formation is man-made and is called Puo o Hiro (Hiro’s hole or trumpet). It is covered with Komari symbols (female vulvas). Its name comes from the fact that blowing through some of the holes in the stone produces a sound that can be heard from a great distance. Some Rapa Nui people are skilled at making it sound, which is no easy feat.

It is a unique artifact on the island, and its use is not well understood. It was likely a calling instrument, although it could also have been the centerpiece of a ceremonial site dedicated to Hiro, the rain god, as the area is rich in monuments and petroglyphs.
