In the last half of 2010 and the summer of this year, there have been droughts in continental Chile as well as on Easter Island.\u00a0 This is due to the oceanic phenomenon known as \u201cLa Ni\u00f1a\u201d, which, this time, has been the largest and longest since 1975, before diminishing slowly into the second semester of the year.\u00a0 Corvette Captain Alejandro de la Maza of the Meteorological Service of the Chilean Navy explains that \u201cevery 2 to 7 years in the tropical Pacific region, we have the phenomena of \u201cEl Ni\u00f1o\u201d (unusual warming of the tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean) and \u201cLa Ni\u00f1a\u201d (unusual cooling of the same), the consequences of which extend to Asia, Oceania and America.\u00a0 These phenomena are also known as ENSO (El Ni\u00f1o Southern Oscillation) due to the interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere.\u00a0 Any change in the wind will produce a corresponding change in the atmospheric pressure.\u00a0 The Southern Oscillation gets its name from the differences in atmospheric pressure that occur between Tahiti and Australia and which last from 6 months up to 2 years and can affect the rainfall, the air temperatures, the nutrients in the water and the variety of marine life which can be found in the area.\u00a0 Some studies indicate that there really is no \u201cnormal\u201d condition because it is always in transition from one state to another\u201d.\"\"

During \u201cEl Ni\u00f1o\u201d, surface waters which are normally poor in nutrients are separated from the colder, richer waters found in the deep sea and only warmer, less nutritious water is brought to the surface.\u00a0 During a \u201cLa Ni\u00f1a\u201d period, the South Pacific anticyclone, which is located between the Juan Fern\u00e1ndez Islands and Easter Island rotating in the opposite direction of the earth\u2019s rotation, strengthens the winds and currents in their normal direction.\u00a0 Cooler water evaporates less, producing fewer clouds and, therefore, less rain.\u00a0 Both these phenomena are related to climatic upsets in many parts of the world, as well as alterations in ecosystems on both land and sea.\"\"
