{"id":10527,"date":"2019-09-02T16:12:52","date_gmt":"2019-09-02T16:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moevarua.com\/german-archaeological-excavation\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T01:06:58","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T01:06:58","slug":"german-archaeological-excavation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moevarua.com\/en\/german-archaeological-excavation\/","title":{"rendered":"German Archaeological Excavation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/moevarua.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/2e098992-e243-4011-8d49-c4d83ad12dee.jpg\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 987px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 987\/1280;display:block; margin:20px auto; max-width:100%; height:auto;\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/p>\n<h1><strong>AVA RANGA UKA A TOROKE HAU<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2><strong><em>German Archaeological Excavation <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>(2nd Stage)<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>New studies are being done by the German and Swiss archaeological team, together with the Anthropological Museum and the Mata Ki Te Rangi Foundation of Rapa Nui, at Ava Ranga Uka a Toroke Hau near Vaitea <em>(located in the center of the Island).<\/em>\u00a0 The current work is a continuation of that begun with the first excavation in 2008, to study how fresh water was obtained in this sector in the period of the 15th and 16th centuries, before European contact.\u00a0 According to the Director of the German Archaeological Institute in charge of the work, Dr. Burkhard Vogt :<em> \u201cWater is a vital element and this is the first research that has been done about this important resource on Easter Island.\u00a0 Without water, nobody can survive.\u201d <\/em>There is much bibliographic evidence that in the pre-European period <em>(15th and 16th Centuries)<\/em> the inhabitants lived along the entire coastline.\u00a0 However, there are indications that people also settled inland in the area around Vaitea.
