The bay of Akahanga, located in the centre of the southeastern coast, covers an extension of 493 hectares (1,200 acres) with the highest archaeological density on Rapa Nui. This site is recognised for holding the grave of the mythical king Hotu Matu’a, the legendary founder of the Rapanui people who arrived from Hiva. Toward the coast there is still an isolated grave, preceded by a small yellow tuff moai lying face down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Legend of Hotu Matu’a’s Death and Burial<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to legend, when Hotu Matua, the great mythical first King of Te Pito o Te Henua, died, his subjects made a pallet, placed his body on it and carried him to Akahanga. There they excavated a deep pit and buried him as his oldest son, Tu’u Maheke, stood by his head and his other three sons at his feet. The choice of this location for the burial was no accident: situated at the centre of the coastline, it allowed the king’s Mana to spread equally to both sides of the island, ensuring good harvests and good fishing for the whole population. Two Ceremonial Centres, Four Centuries of Activity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the shore of the small bay there are two ceremonial centres: Ahu Akahanga itself, over 60 metres (197 feet) long with 12 fallen, destroyed moai, and Ahu Ura Uranga Te Mahina with another 10 or 12 moai. Both clearly show evidence of multiple constructions, one on top of the other, indicating persistent ceremonial and religious activity over at least four centuries by the tribes who lived in the area (Ngaure and Marama). In the matrix of the ruined monument there is clear evidence of at least four overlapping constructions from east to west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
