It was thought that Rapa Nui was several million years old, a recent study by Vezzolli & Acocella (2009) showed that extensive volcanism at the Easter Hotspot started some 800,000 years ago, giving birth to the three volcanoes that formed Rapa Nui (Poike, Rano Kau, and Terevaka)

Rapa Nui is an oasis in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and a feeding habitat for marine turtles. The most commonly found species are the Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the Carey, or Hawksbill, turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), both in danger of extinction.

It is a small gray bird with a white neck and breast. It eats seeds and during the morning it is the first to sing, which is why it is called the whistling bird, Manu Puhi in the Rapanui language.
